Mary Theresa Monroe passed away peacefully in her sleep early on Tuesday morning, January 31, 2017. Mary was born on March 18, 1959 in Cleveland, Ohio. She lived for several years in Hollywood, Florida and graduated in 1977 from Hollywood Hills High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Belmont College and had resided in Nashville, Tennessee for thirty-seven years. A true aesthetic, Mary loved the beauty of nature and filled her life with the splendor of color through her own talent as an artist. Her true avocation was her art. She explored the use of a variety of media but emphasized bright and pastel colors, displaying a truly creative perspective on how she saw the world. Her art was her passion and never a commercial pursuit. Over the years her work has been framed and graced the walls of those family and friends dearest to her, always given as an expression of her love for them. She expressed great love for and pride in her family. Her nieces and nephew and her great-nephews and great-niece were her joy in life and often subjects of her art. Her three sisters were her closest friends and spare weekends and vacations were spent thoroughly enjoying their company. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by sisters, Peggy Johnson (Slade), Colleen Harris, and Kelly Monroe. She was loving aunt to Erin Essenburg (Ben), Elly West (Josh) and Slade Johnson, Jr. (Corrie). She was a special great-aunt to Samuel West, Clare Essenburg, Cody West, Landon Essenburg, Henry West and Ari Johnson. Her passing was sudden and unexpected and all who knew and loved her will miss her kindness and optimism. Her light has dimmed here with her loss but her memory will live in our hearts until we enjoy a great reunion in the life to come because of the saving work of Jesus Christ. A graveside service for family and close friends will be conducted on Saturday, February 11, 2017, 10 o'clock am at Calvary Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. ATTN: Donor Relations & Services, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas TX. 75265 and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY. 10004. CRAWFORD MORTUARY & CREMATORY, 615-254-8200
